Havertys Corey Sectional Update + Review

June 27, 2016

Hope you all had a fun weekend! We had a great time checking a big thing off of our summer list– the zoo! We purposely went this weekend because there was a chance of rain, so we were hoping it would be less crowded. We got there soon after they opened and enjoyed smaller crowds and the perfect overcast day. No sunscreen needed! 🙂

I’ve received a few questions recently about how our Havertys Corey sectional has been holding up. It was a new design when we got it, so there weren’t many reviews. I thought I’d do a post reviewing it in case you’re shopping for sectionals and are considering this one!

little bits of home

If you are new to our couch saga, here’s the condensed version… We ordered the Amalfi sectional from Havertys. It pilled horribly and the piping fell and sagged on the cushions after just a month or so. The store told us it was a lemon after a tech came out and verified our couch was “defective” and we brought a couch cushion into the store. They ordered us a new one, but after months of waiting, we learned that it “fell off the truck” and was lost. The manager gave us a discount on a replacement couch, so we ordered the Corey sectional. After 10 months of couch struggles, we finally had a couch worth keeping. You can read about my first impressions in my post here.

We’ve had the couch for a year and a half now and overall, we like it. It’s comfy and holds its shape well. No slouchy cushions!  It is worlds above the original Amalfi couch we had ordered and, thanks to the manager’s discount for our troubles, ended up being the same price. It is super comfortable and has held its shape well! Here’s how it looks today.

However, it’s not without its issues. My biggest issue with it is that it pills just like the Amalfi did. Thankfully, because it’s a different fabric, the pilling isn’t as visible. But, it makes the typically soft couch feel rough. We briefly thought about returning it, but there weren’t any other similar options in our price range, so we kept it. I did discover a great trick for removing the pills, though, which has made this couch so much better. You can read all about that here. In short, we occasionally use a fabric shaver on it to remove the pills. I don’t have to do it often and it helps the pilling problem.

The only other issue we’ve had is that the fabric stitching was defective in one spot. It’s small and we have the fabric warranty, so we can get it fixed for free. I obviously haven’t bothered yet because after all the couch drama, I just couldn’t even think about it anymore.

Price wise, it is one of the only middle of the road options out there. IKEA has a budget friendly sectional, but we didn’t think it was comfortable. The only other sectionals in this shape, color, and style were at Pottery Barn, Ethan Allen, etc and were twice as much money. Price-wise, this one won our vote.

havertys corey sectional review 1

Here’s some side by side images for comparison. The left side is brand new and the right side is 1.5 years old. You can tell we’ve broken it in and it’s lost the initial stiffness, but it has held it’s shape well and doesn’t look saggy.

Overall, I’d give this sectional a rating of 3.5 out of 5. It is a well built, comfortable couch that has held up well to lots of use. It loses half a point for the stitching defect and an entire point for the pilling issue. I wouldn’t recommend this couch to everyone (If you have a bigger budget, spring for the next step up!), but if you’re looking for a budget friendly, comfortable couch and can put up with the fabric maintenance, I’d recommend it to you.

I hope this helps if you are considering purchasing it! If you have this sectional, I’d love to hear about your experience!

HAVERTY’S IS A JOKE. wE ORDERED A CHAIR AND WHEN NOT DELIVERED ON TIME, WE WERE TOLD THAT “OH YEAH, THE FACTORY RAN OUT OF THE FABRIC, SO HAVE TO WAIT TO GET MORE.” tHEN THEY “FORGOT” THE PILLOWS.

thanks for posting a review and update of the Haverty’s corey sectional. We are looking at buying one of these for our family room. What would you consider the next step up from here….Bassett?

    Thanks in advance

Hope it was helpful! I’ve actually not been to Bassett, so not sure. When we were researching and shopping around, the next step up that had the color and size of L-shape sectional we wanted were Pottery Barn and Ethan Allen. They were at least twice the price, so it was a big step up in price. If you find one in the middle of the Haverty’s and PB/Ethan Allen one, please update me! I’d love to hear your review and know other readers would find it super helpful! Happy couch shopping! 🙂

Is your sectional the color pearl or mink? I’m planning to purchase mine later this month!

I love this, it is the sofa I have wanted and great because it has one longer side configuration! Do you mind my asking what blue paint you have and where you got your accent cushions and throw? I am about to redecorate and love your colors you put with it

So glad it’s helpful! The paint is Benjamin Moore Gray Owl mixed in Sherwin Williams Harmony paint. The patterned pillows on the ends are from West Elm, the solid pillows are from World Market, the blue corner pillow is from Home Goods, and the green corner pillow is from Bed Bath and Beyond. The blanket is from Target and I’ve still seen it there recently. Hope that helps, let me know if you have any other questions! Good luck!

Disappointed in the fabric on this couch it started to wear after 7 months and paying $2800+. I would never buy this fabric again and have submitted a complaint to the claims department

Hello Samantha and thanks for the on-going review. We were at havertys today after looking at stickley and several other furniture stores. We had our sights on a bassett section just like thas in a linen type fabric but read too many bad reviews on the seat cushions not staying firm and the dealers were no kind. The sales manager at haverty says bassett is their main competitor for what its worth.
We are looking at the Norfolk sectional at $2399 with the geometric textured chenille 100% polyester fabric. I have to ask what fabric you have on yours that pilled so bad? are the cushions solid foam (1.8 density on norfolk)

Oh man, I wish I remembered! We have whatever the Corey sectional automatically comes with, we didn’t upgrade the foam or the fabric. Hope that helps and I’d love to hear what you ended up getting!

We ended up with the Norfolk sectional in a stock straw color. The foam was the dense 1.8 that comes stock with no other choices and is firm (to be slowly broken in). The polyester fabric is not supposed to pill and we opted for the 5-year protection plan. So far so good!

I’m so grateful for bloggers who post updates like this! I was considering the Almafi but I believe the Corey fabrics have a W fabric code which is easier to clean. Have you had any spills or had to clean anything up? My biggest concern is keeping my couch clean with pets who drool and drag dirt in.

Yes, after having both, highly highly recommend choosing the Corey over the Amalfi! We do not have pets, so I can’t speak to that. But, we do have kids and I’ve definitely spilled soda and coffee on it before myself, too. It has held up amazing against stains!! Everything has come right off and there are zero stains on the couch! We did have the fabric protected with the Scotch Guard type stuff they will put on for you. It was an extra expense, but worth every penny. Hope that helps! 🙂

Thanks so much for updating your honest review. I have been searching for a sectional and was looking at the Almafi and the corey but almost had decided to go with a darker color because I was afraid of stains. You have just encouraged me with your blog to go for the lighter color (which is what I really want) so thank you 🙂 we definitely will be getting the scotch guard and the protection plan.

Hello, wondering if you could tell me what the fabric is of your corey sectional? the fabric in the store yesterday was a 92 polyester/8 linen blend in the charcoal color. Wondering if they’ve updated the fabric since 2015 when it looks like you purchased?

Hey! It looks the same as it did in this post! Still super comfy, too! Does still pill, but I feel like that might have slowed down a little bit. I haven’t been as good about flipping the cushions as I was, but you can’t tell! Hope that helps!

Just wanted to thank you for posting this, we just bought the Norfolk sectional which is very similar to the Corey but a little bigger and the fabric is a tad thicker and has a diamond pattern on it if you look at it up close. Anyways we were torn between the Corey and the Norfolk and your blog really helped us pick all these years later. Hope your sofa is still doing good and feeling comfortable! THANKS for updating folks all these years later :).

One last question, sorry to post so many coments I read several reviews between the Corey sectional and the Norfolk and one concern I had was that some people said the couch was very hard and uncomfortable when first delivered. They suggested it felt different from the floor model. I was wondering if you experienced this? If so did you finally break the couch in to where it was as comfortable as the one in the store. Thanks so much in advance for all your help! 🙂

I’m so sorry I missed your comment! Still going to reply in case anyone else has the same question! The Corey was not hard or uncomfortable at all when we got it, but definitely a little firmer than the floor model at first. It broke in quickly and is super comfy!

Oh no! Ours is so comfy I even don’t mind sleeping on it! It probably does take time to break in. It’s been a while now, I can’t remember how long it took. So sorry!
