Create with Me- Etched Glass Vase

Hey, Friends! It’s time for this month’s Create with Me Challenge! I was so excited that glass etching cream won the vote this time!

I first discovered glass etching cream 7 or so years ago when my friend Betsy made me a plate with my initial etched onto it. I thought it was the coolest thing and bought some etching cream to create my own project with. I used it to write “love” on the glass of a picture frame and put a picture of my grandparents from their dating days inside. I gave it to my grandma for her and Grandpa’s first anniversary after Grandpa passed away.

I was excited to dust off the bottle of etching cream and do a new project with it this month for you! Here’s what I came up with… a striped glass vase! Because, we all know I’m obsessed with stripes. 😉 And, guess what?! It was SO easy and took less than 20 minutes, start to finish!

To get started, you’ll need some Contact Paper, scissors or a paper cutter, a glass vase or cup, a paintbrush you don’t mind throwing away, gloves, and a bottle of glass etching cream. Pro tip: Buy the cream at the craft store when they have a 50% off sale and save yourself a few bucks! 

Cut your Contact Paper into equal strips, the width you want your stripes to be.

Peel off the backing and firmly press onto the vase where you don’t want to etch. I used a cut strip of Contact Paper as a spacer to keep my stripes equal distance apart and marked it with a dry erase marker.

Next, put on some gloves and apply a generous coat of etching cream to the exposed glass. Mine looks wonky because, honestly, this is the same bottle of etching cream that I bought 7 years ago. It still works, but the consistency is off! Ha!

Let the cream sit and work it’s magic for 1-2 minutes, then rinse off. Be sure to wear gloves as the etching cream is not supposed to come in contact with your skin! Then, give your vase a good wash and you’re done! Here’s the finished product!

This is such a flexible project! The possibilities are endless! Make any type of stencil you want with Contact Paper and an Xacto knife and etch away! Best part? Your projects are dishwasher safe! So, go ahead and spruce up some basic glassware from the Dollar Tree! No one will guess where they’re from!
